Valentine's Day is known as a day to celebrate love, but for some couples, it's not a day of joy.
Local organizations that help women in abusive relationships joined together Thursday to bring awareness to domestic violence.
Breaking the Cycle of Domestic Violence included speakers from Legal Aid of East Tennessee, the Knoxville Family Justice Center, Child and Family Tennessee, and the Community Coalition Against Family Violence. They say it's important for women to realize there is help available.
"Domestic violence has long been a sort of secret crime. People didn't want to talk about it, felt it was private. So women didn't know if there was any place for them to go where they could get help and assistance. So by letting them know, they know they have some place to go where people will support them and help them through the steps of whatever they need," said Elizabeth Newton, a volunteer with the Knoxville Family Justice Center.
Anyone in an abusive relationship who is looking for help or a way out can contact the Knoxville Family Justice Center for assistance at (865) 521-6336.
