Officials said American Red Cross opened its Middlebrook Pike shelter Saturday night to house approximately a dozen people displaced by a West Knoxville apartment fire.

Thirty apartment units were without power overnight after a Crossroads West apartment on Brentway Circle caught fire shortly after 10:00 p.m. Saturday.  Firefighters found the fire in a unit of building 106. Its resident told authorities he had been cooking earlier Saturday evening, but was sure he turned off the stove.  Smoke from the fire damaged five other units in the building.

According to KFD Captain D.J. Corcoran, maintenance crews determined it was unsafe to restore power to the building.  Crews initially turned off 48 units during the incident.  Shortly after midnight Sunday, 30 units were still without power after KUB pulled four meters.

A KUB spokesperson said it would not restore the power overnight because the apartment complex wanted its licensed electrician to review the case during the day.

KFD reports no injuries. Fire Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
