Devin Schmidt, a Sevier County High School basketball player, is charged with domestic assault.

A Sevier County High School basketball player will not compete in Tuesday's semi-final playoff game.

That is according to the player himself, Devin Schmidt.

The news comes after the 18-year-old spent part of the weekend in Sevier County Jail after being charged with domestic assault.

According to a warrant for Schmidt's arrest, the father of a 15-year-old girl requested Schmidt's arrest on Saturday, the night the Smoky Bear's defeated Sullivan South.

In an affidavit, the father states Schmidt allegedly assaulted his daughter at Sevier County High School.

According to the document, the pair were dating at the time.

The complaint alleges Schmidt "pushed her against a brick wall, hit her head against it, grabbed her by the neck, spit on her twice, and then broke her cell phone."

It went on to say that the victim suffered "visible injuries consisted with the described assault."

10News spoke with Schmidt on the phone on Monday morning.

He declined to talk on camera but said it was a "big misunderstanding."

Schmidt confirmed he would not be allowed to play in Tuesday's game and was unsure if he would be able to play in future games.

10News also spoke with the father who filed the warrant.

He said he will not drop charges against Schmidt and says more than one person caught the incident on videotape.

Sevier County Schools declined to comment.

The Sevierville Police Department said it cannot release the report since it involves a juvenile and is a domestic incident.

Schmidt's court appearance is on March 20 at 2:00 p.m.
