More than 600 alpacas will be in Sevierville this weekend and the public is invited to see them for free.
The Southern Select Alpaca Show is at the Sevierville Events Center Saturday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Alpacas will be featured in a show ring competition and show off their costumes just before lunch Saturday.
Southeastern Alpaca Association President Karl Heinrich said they have been brought into the United States over the past 25 years. They thrive from Florida to Minnesota.
Fiber from shorn alpacas is transformed into silky fiber available from companies like Alpaca Fiber Solutions. Roo Kline explained it is comparable to the quality of cashmere.
An alpaca auction is set for 6:00 Saturday night.
All weekend artisans will showcase alpaca fiber and examples of felting, fiber arts and fashion.
