Kids at Willow Brook Elementary spent the day Friday learning about Arbor Day and the importance of trees.
They even got some hands-on learning when they planted a weeping willow at their school. The new tree replaces an old one destroyed by a storm.
Teachers say it's a good time and a handy lesson to teach students about the importance of trees.
"Kids need to really understand that trees are important not just in our forested settings, but they're very important in our urban environment. They help to cool down the cityscape, and they add beauty," said Darren Bailey with the Tennessee Division of Forestry.
As part of the ceremony, each kid got a sugar maple tree to take home. Part of their project is to plant it anywhere they want in the community.
