When the Lakeshore Mental Health Institute closed last year, more than 250 employees lost their jobs and only 14 workers kept their positions.
On Monday, however, those 14 employees lost their posts at Lakeshore as well.
According to the State Department of Mental Health, 14 workers with the East Tennessee Transportation Unit retained their jobs after the Lakeshore facility closed. Those employees transferred patients from private facilities to the state facility in Chattanooga.
Spokesperson Michael Rabkin said there wasn't enough demand to keep its Knoxville facility.
Rabkin told 10News that the unit will move to Chattanooga, but he's not sure whether the 14 employees will be moving as well.
Meanwhile a decision over what to do with the Lakeshore property is up for debate. For several years, the state has been transferring Lakeshore over to the city. Recently Tenn. Senator Stacey Campfield filed a bill to put the land up for auction. If passed, the land would go to the highest bidder. Currently, Campfield's bill is in the state house subcommittee.
