A toddler remains hospitalized after police said he accidentally shot himself in the head with a relative's gun Saturday night.
The shooting happened at a home on Woodcrest Drive around 7 p.m.
Detectives said the child was at home with his mother and aunt. According to the police report, the aunt told officers she had removed the gun from her person to use the bathroom and laid it on the bathroom countertop. The aunt added that while in the bathroom her son was acting up and she finished she left the bathroom and forgot her gun.
Police said the child got the .380 handgun and shot himself in the head while his older sister was running bath water for him.
According to the police report, the sister said her younger brother grabbed the gun from the counter and sat on the floor next to her.
The sister said that she thought the gun was one of her brother's play guns and continued to fill the bathtub and that is when the gun discharged. Detectives said the bullet penetrated the skull and exited.
The 3-year-old was conscious as he was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Detectives said doctors told them the child was "the luckiest kid on earth" and has a fighting chance to pull through.
Police said the incident appears to be a tragic accident at this time. Investigators plan to meet with the District Attorney on Monday to discuss the case and whether any charges will be pursued.
