The Tennessee football team practiced in pads for the first time this spring. It was an intense, high-energy session. At one point, the entire team huddled around in a circle to cheer on teammates in a one-on-one tackling drill.
The assistant coaches spoke after practice for the first time this spring. Vols offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian said he is taking him time installing his playbook and trying not to throw too much at them right now. He said his focus is on doing things simple, and doing things right.
As for the defensive side of the ball, defensive coordinator John Jancek was not very happy. He complained about his players tackling technique.
"I think we're a poor tackling defense right now. I've seen poor fundamentals when it comes to tackling. I see guys on the ground. There's a lot of things we've got to get cleaned up in terms of tackling. Guys going to their knees, falling down. You can't play championship defense when you're doing those things," Jancek said.
