A state bill that would require Tennessee mental health professionals to report potential threats to law enforcement has moved forward in the state legislature.

Supporters of the bill argue that it could help prevent mass shootings. The state senate passed the bill unanimously on Thursday.

The bill was part of a push to change mental health laws in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. It requires doctors to inform police and potential victims when a client threatens to harm or kill someone. According to the bill, police must then pass potential threats to the FBI.

A house committee is scheduled to hear the bill next week.
