Runners helped raise money for local dialysis patients through the "Lucky Kidney Run & Walk" in downtown Knoxville on Saturday.
March is "Kidney Month," and more than 400 people came out to support and raise money for the East Tennessee Kidney Foundation, which organized the race. The race raised more than $25,000 for the foundation.
It's proceeds will help fund transportation, screenings and nutrition for local patients.
East Tennessee Kidney Foundation President Sarah Burton said people on dialysis often struggle to make ends meet due to the demands of treatment.
"Often times a dialysis patient cannot work because they have dialysis three times a week, for 4 hours at a time," said Burton. "So they rely on organizations such as ours to provide that transportation for them."
All the money raised from the raise will stay in East Tennessee to help dialysis patients get transportation, dental screenings for transplant recipients and also nutritional supplements.
