Petsafe president and CEO Randy Boyd received special recognition from the Tennessee Board of Regents for his efforts to champion higher education.

Boyd received the 2013 Regents Award for Excellence in Philanthropy at a breakfast in February.

The award recognizes individuals who make a significant impact on higher education in their community.

Pellissippi State Community College nominated Boyd for the honor and hosted the celebratory breakfast.

Boyd and his wife, Jenny, donated $1 million to the Pellissippi State Foundation in 2012. The donation specifically contributed to the purchase of the college's newest campus in Strawberry Plains.

Classes at the campus began in the 2012 fall semester.

Boyd also is involved with other local education nonprofit organizations such as tnAchieves and Knox County's Great Schools Partnership.

His company, PetSafe, develops and offers pet behavior, containment and lifestyle products and services. It is headquartered in Knoxville.

Boyd founded PetSafe's parent company, Radio Systems Corporation, in 1991.
