A Navy SEAL was killed and another injured Thursday in a
parachute-training accident in Arizona, according to a defense
The SEAL who was killed, a senior enlisted
officer, was taken to the University of Arizona Hospital where he was
pronounced dead. The other SEAL is in stable condition at the hospital,
said the official who released the information on condition of
anonymity. The SEAL's name is not being released until 24 hours after
his family has been notified, which is standard military policy.
Defense Department did not say precisely where the accident occurred.
However, the Army operates the Military Freefall School in Yuma, Ariz.
It is the joint services school that teaches special operations troops
how to conduct high-altitude parachute training, including freefalls in
which chutes are opened at low altitude.
Earlier this month, a
military training accident in Nevada killed seven Marines when a mortar
exploded inside a tube before launching.
