NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Senate sponsor of a measure to allow people to display student IDs to vote has changed his mind.

Sen. Bill Ketron had said he would press ahead with the matter even though the version approved by the House would not allow the practice.

But the Murfreesboro Republican decided to concur with the House version on Thursday and the full Senate voted 23-7 in support. The measure is headed to the governor for his consideration.

Ketron told reporters after the vote that he changed his mind after talking to members and realizing he didn't have the votes to pass the version that would allow students to use IDs issued by public colleges and universities to vote.

Currently faculty and graduate assistants on the payroll can use their IDs.
