A team completed the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon with racing wheelchairs, a first for the event.

50 Ability Marathon Team is trying to complete 50 marathons, in 50 states, in 50 weeks.

Knoxville was stop 12.

Accidents left Grant Berthiaume, Paul Erway and Aaron Roux all in wheelchairs.

"This is going to hurt. This is going to be hard. We need to make a reason to be able to do this," Erway said.

The racing wheelchairs do not have gears, making it harder to get up hills.

"This is just a challenge. I challenge myself right now with having a disability so I'm sure I would be challenging my life, you know, in some other way if I wasn't disabled," Roux said.

Money raised from the marathons will benefit the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and will help with spinal cord research, among other things.

"There's more to life than just getting a little down, being injured. Just get out and get after it," Berthiaume said.

The 50 Ability Marathon Team will be in Kansas next week, their 13th marathon in 13 weeks.

The team is still looking for a sponsor to help with travel expenses.

However, all donations made to 50 Ability go toward the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.
