UT fraternities will soon have to comply with new G.P.A. requirements.

UT's Inter-Fraternity Council approved a measure last week that will raise the G.P.A. standards for its chapters from 2.3 to 2.7.

The change takes effect this fall.

Earlier this year, a Greek life task force released a report with recommendations for UT''s fraternities and sororities, but it did not specifically recommend academic changes.

IFC leaders say the university's academic standards are rising, and the expectations among the Greek organizations should be higher as well.

In the spring of 2012, 14 of the 17 IFC chapters maintained an average G.P.A. above 2.7.

The council has not yet decided what action will be taken if a chapter doesn't meet the new standards.  They will take up that issue at their first meeting in the fall.

The Dean of Students Office says it is impressed that the IFC made these changes on its own.
