On Thursday afternoon, TVA opened all three spill gates at Norris Dam.
Norris Dam turned into a man-made waterfall on Thursday afternoon. TVA opened all three gates at the dam, drawing several spectators.
Norris Lake is about five feet above where it should be for this time of year, and two feet above the summer pool levels that TVA maintains for recreation.
In addition, TVA officials say some of the hydroelectric equipment is out for maintenance work.
The last time TVA spilled water at Norris Dam was in 2011.
"We don't spill very often here, about four times in the last 10 years. So it's something that doesn't happen very often. And it's very iconic. Norris was TVA's first dam," said Travis Brickey, a TVA spokesperson.
The dam is spilling about 15,000 gallons of water per second.
Brickey says he expects TVA to continue to spill at the dam into May.
TVA is also spilling at Fort Loudoun.
