Several East Tennessee schools are ranked among the best in the state.

U.S. News and World Report evaluated more than 21,000 public high schools across the country in the areas of student-teacher ratio, college readiness, algebra proficiency, and English proficiency. The magazine put out a list of the best schools in the country, as well as the best schools in each state. More than half a dozen East Tennessee high schools have been ranked in the top 20 in the state.

Oak Ridge High School ranks the highest in East Tennessee, ranking number six in Tennessee. Oak Ridge Schools' Interim Superintendent Bob Smallridge said, "Oak Ridge is a very supportive community for education. I've spent some 20 years here and always felt very fortunate to have the kind of support that we have from the community and the staff."

Hardin Valley Academy ranks number 10 on the list. Principal Sallee Reynolds said, "I've got a group of teachers who are very, very dedicated to teaching kids first. Not teaching them content, but teaching kids."

Rounding out the top 20 best high schools in Tennessee is Maryville High School. Mike Winstead, Assistant Director of Maryville City Schools, said, "We have made huge strides in the number of AP courses we offer. We've more than tripled the number of those courses. We've more than doubled the number of kids taking advanced placement courses, taking the test, and we're having a lot of success there."

Also making the list are Farragut High School (#13), Bearden High School (#14), Morristown West High School (#16), and Greeneville High School (#18).
