Eight Oak Ridge Police officers helped pull an unconscious driver from a burning vehicle late Friday night on North Illinois Avenue and Irene Lane.
Officials took a 911 call at about 11:30 p.m., reporting that a car left the roadway, struck multiple utility poles, caught on fire, and traveled down an embankment.
While police battled to extinguish the flames, Officer Ray Steakley jerked down the driver's side window of the burning vehicle and pulled the man through the window.
Lt. John Kelly, with the Oak Ridge Police Department, said he was impressed by the officers' efforts to help another person.
"They were willing to go into that situation without even thinking about their own safety because they put the public safety first," said Lt. Kelly.
Crews transported the driver to UT Medical Center, and there's no word on his condition.
