East Tennessee Children's Hospital got a generous donation from a man who spent his life giving back to the community.
On Tuesday, trustees of the estate of Wade Travis gave the hospital a check for $1 million dollars. Travis and his brothers owned the first Shoney's Big Boy franchises in the Knoxville area. When he died in 2002, he established a trust to be donated to charities that were important to him.
Family members say Travis always took a special interest in children and made numerous donations to the hospital during his lifetime.
"It means so much. We are so committed to this community and the community has such an affair with us. These funds will help us continue with our mission to take care of kids whose families don't have a means of paying, and we can continue to do meaningful work in the community," said Keith Goodwin, CEO of Children's Hospital.
After the check presentation, the trustees took a tour of the hospital.
