Knoxville kicked off Law Enforcement Week with the 6th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Run on Saturday. The 5K race took officer and civilian runners through downtown and along the Tennessee River.
The run raises awareness about first responders who lost their lives in the line of duty. The proceeds from the race will go to a fund to build a local memorial for the fallen officers.
Race officials said it's important to say thank you to our local officers. "The importance of law enforcement? Oh my gosh, don't ask me that," race director Pam Dekto said. "They do everything, they're awesome."
There was also a competitive side to the race. The 5K is part of the Run and See Tennessee Grand Prix. Runners from every age group in that race compete for the title of state champion.
