Former Lady Vol Head Volleyball Coach Julie Hermann, 49, is facing scrutiny after Rutgers University hired her as its new athletic program director on May 11.

The New Jersey university hired Hermann to help clean up its athletic program after evidence of player mistreatment surfaced. Rutgers dismissed several members of its athletic department due to the cover up.

The New Jersey Star-Ledger reported Saturday that Hermann left the University of Tennessee 16 years ago after players accused her of "ruling through humiliation, fear and emotional abuse" during her stint as head coach in 1991-1996

An Associated Press article reported Sunday that the entire team reportedly signed a letter alleging the verbal abuse. Several of those players continue to maintain those claims, saying they're fearful of their former coach's retaliation.

Former Lady Vol Volleyball Player Kim Obiala spoke with CNN's "Starting Point" on Monday.

"Once you attack someone's outside the court where you're attacking their personality, who they are as a person, that's where you've crossed the line. I mean, there's no reason for that, and i've definitely had some tough coaches that have pushed me beyond my physical limits, but this was more mental, and psychological," said Obiala.

Hermann responded to the article, saying she has no knowledge of these allegations. She told the Star Ledger that she was "mystified" by the allegations.

Some of Hermann's former assistant coaches are backing her up. According to an ESPN article, Assistant Coach Kim Tibbetts said these allegations are crazy. Tibbetts began working with Hermann in 1992. She said the reports are shocking and insists Hermann loved the kids.

10News reached out to several of the players, but we have not yet heard back.
