The Blount County Sheriff's Office said a Heritage High School student likely died from an accidental gunshot wound.

Investigators say emergency crews pronounced 17-year-old Skyler Daniel Boring of Maryville dead at UT Medical Center Tuesday night.

The shooting happened in the Walland area of the county around 10:00 pm.  According to the Blount County Sheriff's Office, when deputies arrived at the residence where the shooting occurred, someone had already put Boring into a vehicle to take him to Blount Memorial Hospital.

Authorities say that vehicle met up with an ambulance at the Exxon/Huddle House gas station on Hwy. 321 in Maryville.  From there, Boring was taken to Blount Memorial Hospital.

His grandparents say nurses then stabilized him before LifeStar flew him away to UT Medical Center.

It was there that he died.

"It's just a senseless tragedy that should never happen," said Skyler's grandmother, Judy Mincey.

The details of the incident are still under investigation, but a Blount County Sheriff's Office spokesperson did say the incident appears to be an accident.

However, the occurrence confused Skyler's grandfather, Jerry Mincey, who said the high school senior had experience with guns.

"We got conflicting stories that they were playing with guns, playing a war game," he said.

Boring just graduated from Heritage High School.  He was the co-captain of the wrestling team and planned to attend Pellissippi State in the Fall.

His funeral is set for Saturday. Details can be found here.
