Alcoa man killed in accident with dump truck

(WBIR-Blount County) The Tennessee Highway Patrol has released the name of a man who was killed in a Blount County accident Monday night.   

According to the THP, Matthew Dixon of Alcoa was killed in the crash that injured five others.

It happened at Highway 321 and Lane Drive in Friendsville near Uncle Dave's market, around 7:00 p.m.

State troopers say Dixon was a passenger in a Dodge Caravan.

Five other people went to hospitals, including an infant and the driver of the truck, which was carrying concrete powder.

No charges are expected at this time.

Highway 321 has since reopened in the Friendsville area.

A person is dead and several others are in the hospital after a dump truck and a Dodge Caravan collided on West Lamar Alexander Parkway Monday evening.

It happened around 7:20 p.m. on Highway 321/ West Lamar Alexander Parkway at the intersection of Lane Drive.

THP Trooper Chris Best says it appears the Dodge Caravan pulled in front of the dump truck, which contained some kind of concrete powder. The van had five passengers, four adults and a child. One adult male passenger was killed during the crash.

Best says the other four passengers and the driver of the dump trunk were all transported to UT Medical Center. One person was transported via Lifestar.

Witnesses described the traumatic scene.

"Looked like a bomb went off. A bunch of dust and everything. We tried to get down there. There was a lady screaming, we tried to get the doors open to get down and help here. There was nothing we could do," said Ray Thompson.

"You couldn't even tell what was going in because the cars we're so mangled, there was dirt everywhere, and smoke and it was really bad," added Lexy Thompson.

Dozens of emergency personnel helped with the crash.

An investigation is ongoing, but police do not expect charges to be filed.
