Darrin Moran sent us a video question. He said, "I had a video question for Todd. I was wondering if there was a difference between regular lightning or sometimes especially during spring time between ground to cloud lightning. I know it's not safest to be outside anytime, but is there actually a difference? Is it really different at all?"
Darrin, thanks for sending in that question. The simple answer is yes, there are differences between the two.
There are actually several types of lightning including cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-ground, dark lightning, and several variations.
Cloud-to-cloud lightning happens when lightning strikes happen between two clouds or several clouds. You still shouldn't be outside, but it's not as dangerous.
Cloud-to-ground lightning is the most dangerous. It poses the greatest threat to life and property because the lightning goes from the cloud and strikes something on the ground.
Cloud-to-cloud lightning isn't as harmful, but should still be taken seriously.
