(WBIR- Niota) The city of Niota is laying off seven workers as a crisis over insurance coverage continues.
The city's mayor, Lois Preece, said at a meeting Monday that city leaders decided to lay off three police department workers, two street department workers, as well as two other city officials. The city's library will also shut down.
The city has restored auto insurance coverage but still has no insurance for liability, police or fire protection.
All city departments are continuing to operate.
The city's insurance company dropped the liability policy earlier in the year amid complaints of harassment by commissioners. The mayor says the city plans to ask an independent company to investigate the commissioners.
The TBI is also conducting an investigation.
