Tuesday Update

(WBIR, Knoxville) Police say the death of a man involved in a standoff last week was a suicide.

The standoff happened last Friday night on Cate Avenue, off Sutherland Avenue. Officers responded to a domestic dispute and heard gunshots coming from the home.

They found a woman was outside. Police tried to make contact with her husband for about two hours and cleared some neighbors from their homes as a precaution.

When they couldn't reach the man, the SWAT team went inside.

Authorities say the man shot himself just as the officers entered the home.

Update: 9:40 a.m. Saturday

(WBIR-Knoxville) A SWAT team discovered a body in a West Knoxville home following a standoff near Sutherland Avenue late Friday night.

Knoxville police said the call came in as a domestic dispute at a home on Cate Avenue around 9:15 p.m. When officers arrived on the scene, they heard gunshots coming from the house and saw a woman outside the residence.

For a couple of hours, police could not make contact with the woman's 45-year-old husband. Officers told neighbors to leave their homes temporarily as a precaution.

Lt. Christ Baldwin said after they didn't hear a response for awhile, they decided to send the SWAT team inside the home.

"At a certain point, since there was no contact, we decided to look inside the house. Tactical squads did that in a safe manner and found a deceased person inside," explained Baldwin.

Officials aren't releasing the husband's name at this time. The medical examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death, and officials said the wife is safe.
