(WBIR, Knoxville) More sections of Gay Street are on track to see upgrades. You'll recall the 100 block underwent a streetscape project a couple of years ago. Tuesday night, city council approved renovations for three more blocks.

They include the 400 and 500 blocks of North Gay. The city will add new trees and better sidewalks and lighting there.

The area is badly in need of a facelift. The sidewalks are old and deteriorating, while some buildings have been vacant for years.

Auto Technicians has been on the 500 block for over 30 years, and they say they're looking forward to the improvements.

"What they're going to do is more planning. We're going to have little trees, we're going to have flowers. We're going to get new lighting so we're getting a lot of these old lights taken down. The biggest thing is we're going to match what they're doing on the other side of Gay. So it just ties us all in," said Judy Newcomb, owner of Auto Technicians.

City council also plans similar work on the 700 block of South Gay Street between Church Street and Cumberland Avenue.

Council members approved construction contracts for both areas Tuesday.
