(WBIR- Morristown) More than 200 new jobs are coming to Morristown.
On Thursday, Gov. Bill Haslam and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bill Hagerty joined officials with Oddello Industries, LLC to announce a $4 million expansion. It will create 228 new positions in Hamblen County.
"Being a sales tax state that we are, our goal is to put paychecks in people's hands and letting them spend that money locally. And that means a lot to our economy," said Marshall Ramsey, the President of the Morristown Area Chamber of Commerce.
The County and City Mayors praised the good news, noting the recent loss of jobs to overseas facilities over the past few years.
"I think it's been a slow process, and then the hit with Bercline of course was icing on the cake as far as loss of jobs. But since that time we've seen a steady increase," said Danny Thomas, the Mayor of Morristown.
"We're a manufacturing town, that's who we are. And that's what we pride ourselves in helping our companies being successful," said Bill Brittain, the Mayor of Hamblen County. "And we want them to know that, that we're cheerleaders for them and we'll do what we can to help them."
Oddello's announcement comes after other area companies revealed they were expanding. In May, Team Technologies announced it would be adding 200 jobs and Sonoco announced it would be adding nearly 30 jobs.
Employees at local restaurant said the expansions directly impact their business. Waitresses at Davy Crockett Restaurant, located just a few miles from Oddello, said they hope to lure in more regular customers.
"I feel like we have probably 40 percent who come and are regular and visit us everyday," said Teresa Crisp. "We could always use more business."
Brittain said the skills of local workers drive businesses back to his county.
"We spend a lot of time in developing the workforce that has the skills that companies need. We put a lot of effort into it. We have the technology school, we have Walter State Community College, we have an award winning school system," said Brittain.
"I want to thank Oddello for its investment in Tennessee and for the new jobs the company is creating and bringing to Hamblen County," Haslam said in a press release. "We are fortunate to have strong companies like Oddello continuing to grow in our state and helping us toward our goal of becoming the No. 1 state in the Southeast for high quality jobs."
Oddello Industries is a globally-focused contract manufacturer serving the world's leading furniture brands. In the past year, the company has made a substantial investment in three separate properties in the East Tennessee Valley Industrial District, utilizing nearly 1 million square feet of floor space in all for production.
