(WBIR, Knoxville) - It's a divisive issue that's been debated before in Blount County.
On Tuesday, several people protested at the South Blount County Utility District saying they don't want fluoride in their water.
A survey was sent out recently to customers asking if they wanted to keep fluoride in the water. The majority that returned the survey voted in favor of fluoride, but it was not a large majority.
"It's causing IQ problems for our kids. It's causing kidney disease, thyroid disease, like I said IQ problems. It's just something that we should not be using," said Linda King.
There were also speakers at the meeting from the medical field who are customers of South Blount County Utility District. They wanted the board to keep using fluoride because they believe it is beneficial for children.
"We see a lot of kids out there who have a lot of problems with their teeth, and it's difficult, painful, expensive to take care of that. And for pennies we can prevent a lot of that," said Dr. Mark Durant.
The board did not take any action on the issue which means fluoride will remain in the water, but those at the meeting against it say they will keep fighting.
