(WBIR - Farragut) An important Farragut landmark is one step closer to new life.

The mayor and Board of Alderman signed a letter of intent last week to spend $1.25 million to buy the Martin Russell house at the corner of Kingston Pike and Campbell Station Road. The mayor plans to form a committee to raise funds to renovate the home.

It was built in 1835, and it's listed on the National Register of Historic Homes. The Russell family recently put the property up for sale.

The city plans to renovate the building for a new use.

The home was used as a hospital during the Battle of Campbell's Station in the Civil War.
