(WBIR - Athens) An act of kindness turned into a scary incident for one McMinn County woman and her young son.

According to an Athens Police report, the woman was driving with her 9-year old son and picked up Stephen Conar on the side of the road.

While she was driving him to his home in Athens, he threatened to kill himself. As she was pulling out of the driveway, she says she saw the man put a rifle in his mouth.

She called the sheriff's department to report the incident and drove away.

A short time later, she noticed the man was following her and said the man pointed a gun at her.

She waved down an officer in Athens and asked for help. She was talking to the officer when Conar hit the back of her car with his car.

An officer arrested Conar and found the gun sitting in the passenger's side.

Conar told officers he did not point a gun at the woman. He says he was following the woman because he had her cell phone and he wanted to return it.

He faces charges for aggravated assault.
