(THE TENNESSEAN) The American Red Cross has launched a new smart phone app, aimed at making it easier for people to volunteer.
Red Cross officials hope the app will help the public better prepare to help during emergencies.
"When people see an emergency happening in their community, they often want to help but may not know how," said Joel Sullivan, Regional CEO, Tennessee Volunteer Region. "The Team Red Cross App provides an easy and quick way for people to sign up to help the Red Cross and support their community."
The app is free and designed for iPhone and Android smart phones and tablets. It can be downloaded Apple App Store and the Google Play Store or at redcross.org/mobileapps.
Once the app is downloaded, users can sign up for a free account. The app will give them details about volunteer jobs, such as working in a warehouse, handing out supplies or assisting with feeding.
When the Red Cross needs or volunteers, the Team Red Cross App will sent out alert based on locations. Potential volunteers can instantly accept or decline the volunteer opportunity.
Volunteers can also donate on their smart phones using the app.
