FORT CAMPBELL, KY (WSMV) - Family and friends of a Fort Campbell soldier reported missing for several days say the man has been found dead.
The soldier, Brandon Bertolo, 23, had not been seen since last weekend, and on Monday, the military called his family, looking for Bertolo.
Later, the family learned he was considered AWOL.
A body was found in a wooded area Friday in the south end of the Fort Campbell military post, said officials.
The Army's criminal investigation division is looking into the matter, according to Brendalyn Carpenter with the public affairs office, and the post has not yet confirmed the identity of the body.
A Fort Campbell spokesman would not offer details but said Bertolo was under investigation.
"He's not a runner. He's always stood up to his responsibility, and it's really hard for us as parents not to even know why he's running," said stepmother Charity Bertolo.
"I can't believe my son would just walk away," said father David Bertolo.
Bertolo's family reached out to friends and strangers on Facebook in an attempt to find him.
In a message posted to the search group's Facebook page Friday, Bertolo's mother Anita Flores wrote: "I want to thank everyone for your prayers and love and support you all send our way. I'm devastated that I am burying my 23 year old son. He was my heart and soul, and my hero. And no matter what happen I will always be proud of my son, my friend, and my soldier."
