(WBIR - Knoxville) We're seeing the first signs of progress on a downtown eyesore two weeks after the city announced plans to buy and redevelop the McClung Warehouses.
The Knoxville City Council approved Mayor Madeline Rogero's plans to purchase the burned buildings Monday night for close to $1.5 million. The council also voted to change the budget to pay for it.
Rogero says the progress is an exciting sign to fix up an old eyesore.
Next, the Knoxville Community Development Corporation must approve the deal along with a bankruptcy judge. If that all goes through, the city will work to stabilize the building then invite developers to weigh in.
"Get it back on the rolls, get it in the hands of somebody that will add value to the property and add value to the north end of downtown," described the mayor.
Rogero has not laid out exact plans for the building. She has said she wants to open it up for mixed use including retail, office, and living space.
