President Obama plans to nominate Caroline Kennedy to be ambassador to Japan, according to news reports.

Kennedy is the daughter of former president John F. Kennedy, and a long-time political supporter of Obama.

The Senate must still confirm Kennedy.

She would join a long list of prominent ambassadors to Japan, including former vice president Walter Mondale and former House speaker Tom Foley.

East Tennessee's own Howard Baker, Jr, served as Ambassador to Japan from 2001 to 2005.  The Huntsville native was nominated by George W. Bush.
