(WBIR - Knoxville) Five years after a deadly church shooting, members of the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universality Church continue working toward recovery.

On July 27, 2008, Jim David Adkisson walked into TVUUC and started shooting during a children's play. Two people were killed. Seven others were wounded.

Adkisson pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and is serving a life sentence in prison.

Five years later, the church has held several group discussions about the experience. Church leaders say those meetings appear to be helping those who were inside the sanctuary that day.

"Almost everyone cites that they have greater empathy when things like this happens to other people," said Rev. Jenny Arthur.

"There is tremendous gratitude for life and a sense of intentionality about life that might not have been there before."

TVUUC will have a special healing prayer during their Sunday morning service. The church also plans to put together a time capsule with items church members have kept related to the 2008 shooting.

From now on, TVUUC will officially mark the shooting anniversary every ten years, rather than annually.
