Radio talk show host and former UT quarterback Erik Ainge told the officer who pulled him over for erratic driving that he was texting behind the wheel.

Knoxville Police said Ainge was stopped around 1:15 am Sunday morning, while driving his 2014 GMC Sierra on I-40 West near the West Hills exit.

According to the initial incident report, the officer saw the vehicle "swerving in and out of his lane."

Ainge told the officer he was texting while driving.  He also said he was coming home from a party and that he was the designated driver.

The officer said Ainge "did very poorly" on field sobriety tests but refused a blood test.  He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, implied consent, and roadway lane violation.

Ainge was released from jail a few hours later, after paying a $500 bail.

Ainge was UT's quarterback from 2004 to 2008. He currently has his own radio show, The Eric Ainge Show.  He has openly admitted to struggling with drug and alcohol abuse in the past.

He released a statement about his arrest to 10News: "I have always been completely transparent about my professional and personal life. I've been an open book about my past struggles. This situation is no different. When the time is right I will explain exactly what happened, but right now I have to let the legal issues play out. I appreciate the outpouring of support from my listeners, my VOL family, and my Tennessee Sports Radio family."
