(WBIR - Rogersville) A jury heard opening statements Tuesday morning in the first-degree murder of a son shooting his father.

Ethan Self is accused of killing his father three years ago in Greeneville. The body of Roger Self was found in his bed by his supervisor when he didn't show up for work.

Self worked for the Greeneville Police Department. His case is being tried in Rogersville.

Jurors heard what Ethan said happened that day when prosecutors read his confession.

"Dad was snoring and then he got quiet. I thought he was awake and knew I was there. He snored again and startled me. That's when the gun went off," stated Dennis Brooks, assistant district attorney.

The defense says Ethan accidentally shot his father. They say Roger Self was not just abusive toward his son but his wife as well. The defense told jurors ethan had suffered mental and physical abuse for many years.

Prosecutors called witnesses all day. The trial will resume Wednesday morning.
