(WBIR-Knoxville) On Monday, we got a look at how students are performing in the classroom across Tennessee when the state released the TCAP scores.

The governor and the education commissioner released those scores this afternoon at an event near Nashville. They highlighted the schools that are in the top 5% in Tennessee, in both growth and academic performance.

From that list, here are the top schools as far as overall performance in East Tennessee.

  • Alcoa High
  • Clinton Elementary
  • Maryville High and Junior High
  • Foothills Elementary
  • Farragut High
  •  L and N STEM Academy
  • Sequoyah Elementary

The last three are in Knox County, and school leaders are proud of their top performers.

"It's exciting when we see schools in the top 5 percent for performance, its also exciting when we see schools in the top five for progress. We also have one school that's for both performance and progress, and thats Farragut High School," said Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre.

We also looked at the schools in Knox County where more than half of the students were below basic proficiency in a subject.
