(WBIR-Cumberland County) A new state report outlines authorities' accusations that a former Cumberland County veterans services officer stole thousands of dollars from the office for his personal use.
A grand jury indicted Mark Daniels on a charge of theft of more than $10,000 last September. The state comptroller's offices said Daniels stole at least $134,000 from the office between July 2009 and September 2012, but auditors said he didn't keep good records, so he may have stolen more.
The audit shows that Daniels made a separate bank account in the name of the "Cumberland County Veteran's Service Office" when it became part of the county government in 2009. Officials accuse Daniels of writing checks to himself and his wife from the account, keeping cash donations instead of depositing them, and depositing checks into his personal account instead of the office account.
Cumberland County officials made changes to the office to prevent future theft.
