On the heels of major supreme court decisions and votes in several states to legalize gay marriage, gay rights supporters in Tennessee are calling for similar action here.
A couple of local groups organized an ice cream social at Tyson Park Friday evening along with a performance from the Knoxville Gay Men's Chorus.
It was one of several events around the state marking Marriage Equality Day.
Tennessee passed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage several years ago, but gay advocates point to growing support for their cause nationwide.
"We wanted to make sure all couples have the opportunity to celebrate. We do think it's good we are celebrating marriage and opportunities that can provide to families in making them stronger," said Bleu Copas.
Several other rallies were held Friday, including ones in Memphis, Nashville, and Chattanooga.
