CLIFTON, TN (WSMV) - A state prison has gone into lockdown after an inmate was killed and five others hurt in a fight Sunday afternoon.
Prisoners at South Central Correctional Facility in Wayne County began fighting at several locations simultaneously, said Sonya Hefner with Corrections Corporation of America, which operates the facility.
Staff had to break up fights involving 15 different inmates in the dining hall, outside yard and two housing pods. Guards used non-lethal force to stop the fights, Hefner said.
One inmate was pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m. and five others were taken to the hospital for treatment. No prison staff were injured.
The facility was placed into lockdown as a precaution, and visitation was canceled for the day.
Local police and the Department of Correction were notified, Hefner said. The TBI has been asked to assist with the investigation since it involves the death of a person in custody.
The South Central Correctional Facility is a medium-security prison with a capacity of 1,642 prisoners, according to the TDOC website. It opened in 1992.
