Confederate flag rally staged in Crossville

(WBIR - CROSSVILLE) - As the nationwide debate over the Confederate flag continues, some Tennesseans joined together to display their support for the flag.

Dozens of people took part in a rally Wednesday night in Crossville.

The group waved Confederate flags and then drove through part of the town together.

Organizers believe there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding the flag.

They say it has nothing to do with hate, but instead is a symbol of Southern heritage.

"For those of us here whose ancestors died under that flag, to let it be taken away would be to let them have died in vain. And we're not gonna do that," said flag supporter Phillip Shepherd.

Opponents, however, say perceptions of the flag's meaning have changed. To them, the flag has become a symbol of a racist, narrow-minded era of oppression.

The slaying of nine black worshipers in a Charleston, S.C., church last month has sparked national debate about the flag's meaning. The alleged gunman was depicted in photos sporting the Confederate flag.
