Driver facing charges after fleeing traffic stop, hitting another vehicle

May 3, 2017: Knoxville police say a crash on Interstate 40 was caused by a driver who had earlier fled from police.

A driver who police say fled from a traffic stop faces charges after crashing into another vehicle on Interstate 40 Tuesday night.

Knoxville Police responded to a crash at Interstate 40 East and Rutledge Pike just after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say a gold Toyota Land Cruiser was driving eastbound when it ran off the road and hit a maroon Honda CRV that was heading eastbound on the entrance ramp from Rutledge Pike.

The Toyota overturned, and the driver of the Honda had to be extricated by emergency responders.

Both drivers were taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

KPD said an officer attempted to pull the Toyota over before the crash occurred, but the Toyota fled. Officers followed, but stopped trying to pull the vehicle over about one mile west of the Rutledge Pike exit.

KPD said charges are pending against the driver of the Toyota. The driver's name was not released.
