Witnesses: Woman charged with killing niece fired without warning

At a preliminary hearing on Monday, prosecutors said a Hawkins County woman shot her niece without warning after a heated text message exchange.

Beth Anne Manis, 43, is charged with shooting her 25-year-old niece, Brittany L. Murray, on October 1.

The shooting happened when Murray showed up at Manis' home to confront her. Investigators said Manis shot Murray in the head as she got out of her car.

Murray was a new mother with a three-month old baby.

The case against Manis was sent to a grand jury for formal charges to be placed. Her bond was set at $50,000 dollars.

The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office said an aunt shot and killed her niece after a text message argument between the two of them.

Beth Anne Manis, 43, is charged with the first-degree murder of Brittany L. Murray, 25, of Kingsport.

Authorities said Murray arrived at Manis’ house on the 5100 block of Carters Valley Road around 9:35 p.m. Saturday, got out of a vehicle and approached the residence. Manis stepped out on the porch, and fired one shot from the .357 revolver, which struck Murray in the head.

The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office said several witnesses said Manis did not give Murray any warning before shooting.

Investigators found Murray in the road in front of the residence, and later determined she had a "verbal altercation via text messages" with Manis. Sheriff’s deputies detained Manis on Saturday night.

Authorities are holding Manis without bond. Manis is due in Hawkins County General Sessions Court on Monday.
