A Hawkins County high school student was taken into custody Thursday after authorities investigating a report of a weapon found an Airsoft pellet gun and silencer on campus, according to the Hawkins County sheriff.
Cherokee High School was put on lockdown Thursday morning amid reports there was a weapon on school grounds, according to Sheriff Ronnie Lawson.
"Administrators and the Hawkins County school resource officer responded to the threat immediately and discovered an Airsoft pellet gun that looked like an actual gun along with a silencer," according to a news release.
The officer took the student into custody. As a precaution, the school remained in lockdown. Authorities wanted to be sure no further threat existed.
The student's name, age and class status was not released.
