KPD: Crash leads to accidental death on interstate ramp

The Knoxville Police Department says a man died after crashing his SUV and jumping off a bridge early Sunday morning.

A release from the department says around 2:00 a.m., an officer got behind an SUV that he thought was driving under the influence.

As the officer got closer, Bronson Williams, 24, drove onto I-275 at Baxter Ave. and accelerated. Police say the car entered the curve on the I-40 East exit ramp and lost control hitting the wall and sliding backwards to a stop.

When the officer approached the SUV, he turned on his emergency equipment and spotlight. The officer said two people climbed over the back seat. Bronson got out of the car and ran to the back of the SUV where he jumped off the bridge. Police say he landed 36 feet below.

Bronson was taken to UT Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Officers found two firearms and illegal narcotics in the SUV.

The passenger was interviewed by investigators and released, but charges are pending.
