KPD: Mother drove drunk in school zone with kids in car

Sept. 14, 2016: Knoxville police arrested a mother they say was driving drunk in a school zone with her children in the car.

KNOXVILLE - The Knoxville Police Department arrested a mother Wednesday for driving under the influence in a school zone with children in the car.

KPD said Mary Emmett drove her vehicle through the school zone of Gresham Middle School while children were arriving for school.

Emmett is charged with one count of DUI with additional charges possible as the investigation continues.

Knoxville police said a 12-year-old exited Emmett’s car, and went to school. A 3-year-old child was also in the car.

The E-911 Center received a call from another motorist who reported Emmett might have been driving while intoxicated near the McDonald’s on Broadway. The motorist told dispatchers there were children in the vehicle, and followed the car while providing director of travel to dispatchers.

Officers were able to stop Emmett’s vehicle as it exited from Gresham Middle School, and administered a field sobriety test before taking Emmett into custody.

Knoxville police officers played games with the 3-year-old child until family members could arrive to pick up the child.
