KPD: Overnight shooting began as verbal argument

Reporter Brandon Bates brings us the latest details from the scene of an early morning shooting on May 19, 2017.

KNOXVILLE - Update Friday 5 p.m. 

Knoxville Police continue to investigate an overnight shooting that sent a woman to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

According to the preliminary investigation, the victim and a man were involved in a verbal argument when the man shot the woman and then fled the scene. 

Around 3:29 a.m., officers responded to a report of a person who had been shot at the intersection of Chickamauga Avenue and Oswald Street in North Knoxville. Police found the victim with a gunshot wound lying in the street. 

She was taken to UT Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

A few minutes after getting to the scene, officers discovered a vehicle nearby with a stolen license plate. The vehicle drove off as the officer tried to pull it over. The suspect eventually drove off teh road and into a creek near the Broadway Shopping Center. 

The male suspect then ditched the car and ran. 

Officers weren't able to find him and aren't sure if he was connected to the shooting. 

Authorities have not released the shooting victim's name because they're still working to contact relatives.

Knoxville police are searching for a suspect involved in an early morning shooting Friday.

At 3:20 a.m., dispatch received a call reporting someone had been shot in North Knoxville. Police found a woman with a gunshot wound lying in the street at the intersection of Chickamauga Avenue and Oswald Street.

The victim was transferred to U.T. Medical Center. According to police, she is unresponsive and in critical condition. 

A man was seen running from the scene. Police said they believe they know who he is. Officers spotted him near the scene, sparking a chase around Whittle Springs Rd. and Washington Pike in the North Hills area. At one point the suspect abandoned the car he was driving on Walker Blvd. behind the Food City there. He then ran into the woods near First Creek and has not been seen since.

Police did not give a description of the suspect. 

Officers do not think residents are in danger at this time.
