Man arrested after attempting to carjack elderly woman and her grandson

Sept. 20, 2016: Steven Davis faces several charges after Knoxville police say he tried to carjack an elderly woman and her grandson.

A Knoxville man was arrested Tuesday after police say he tried to carjack an elderly woman and her grandson and rammed into several vehicles.

Steven R. Davis, 28, will face several charges including aggravated assault, auto theft and carjacking.

Around 4 p.m., first responders were dispatched to the gas station outside Walmart on Green Road off Chapman Highway.

Emergency crews called police for a possible overdose after they found Davis unconscious inside a U-Haul truck.

Once officers arrived, Davis became violent and fled from the scene. The officers immediately chased after him into the parking lot of a gas station.

Once in the parking lot, police say Davis jumped into the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle. He tried to drive away, but the car’s engine was off. Davis, then, ran across the parking lot to a nearby business and attempted to carjack a 74-year-old woman with her 11-year-old grandson inside the vehicle.

Officers fought with Davis as he tried to force the elderly woman out of her car. A Good Samaritan saw the struggle and blocked the car from leaving. Police finally took Davis into custody after he rammed the woman’s car into the Good Samaritan’s vehicle.

The woman suffered minor injuries, but the child was not hurt. She was treated by first responders at the scene and released.

Davis was also wanted for a hit-and-run that took place earlier in the day, police said.

Police believed he used the U-Haul truck to ram three vehicles and a bridge abutment on Loves Creek near Rutledge Pike.
